Novel Botanical 9: Echinacea, Beebalm and Kousa Fruit (2025)
This piece belongs to my Novel Botanicals series, paintings that imagine the native and introduced flora of Western Massachusetts as they might exist in a future landscape. Beebalm holds a special place in these fields I walk and observe, a plant that draws in pollinators and holds its own even as its neighbors shift and change around it.
Painting these novel environments became a way for me to think about evolution as something ongoing rather than finished. New combinations, new relationships, new ground being sorted out under our feet. My background in soil microbiology often finds its way into how I see these plants, not just as subjects to render but as part of a living, changing ecosystem.
This museum-quality print is made on thick matte paper, a lovely way to bring a piece of this imagined landscape into your own home or studio.
