When I think of Harriet Tubman, I think not only of her courage, but of her relationship with the natural world.
She understood that the landscape held knowledge. She used the North Star to guide people to freedom. She knew the healing properties of plants. The earth and the sky were not simply scenery, they were companions, teachers and tools for survival.
This painting honors that way of seeing.
Behind Harriet Tubman is the Crane's Bill flower, chosen to symbolize resilience, while the night sky woven into her dress reflects the constellations that guided countless journeys toward freedom. Together, these botanical and celestial elements tell a story of courage, wisdom and liberation.
My work often begins with careful observation of flowers and the natural world. In this piece, those observations become a way of exploring history, memory and the remarkable lives of those who understood that nature itself could be a path toward freedom.
