Novel Botanical 17 imagines a single branch carrying the flowering habits of several different plants at once — a fuzzy catkin, a cluster of spurred red-and-green blooms, a lone magenta flower, and a spray of pink blossoms, all opening together in spring.

This piece continues my Novel Botanicals series, paintings that imagine the native and introduced flora of Western Massachusetts as they might exist in a future landscape. Here, that future takes the form of one plant built from many — different flowering strategies grafted onto a single branch, a way of picturing how species might combine and adapt to survive as their environment shifts around them.

The stormy blue sky behind the branch nods to a wet, uncertain spring, the kind of season this multi-plant seems built to weather.

My background in soil microbiology often shapes how I think about these paintings — not just as portraits of flowers, but as small ecosystems working out new relationships in real time.

This museum-quality print is made on thick matte paper, a lovely way to bring a piece of this imagined landscape into your own home or studio.
