This piece belongs to my Novel Botanicals series, paintings that imagine the native and introduced flora of Western Massachusetts as they might exist in a future landscape.
Painting these novel environments became a way for me to think about evolution as something ongoing rather than finished. New combinations, new relationships, new ground being sorted out under our feet. My background in soil microbiology often finds its way into how I see these plants, not just as subjects to render but as part of a living, changing ecosystem.
