Sojourner Truth: Rooted in Strength Postcard

Throughout her life, Sojourner Truth found strength, purpose and spiritual renewal in the natural world. Her faith, resilience and unwavering commitment to justice continue to inspire generations.

This painting honors that relationship through botanical symbolism. A single tree in the background reflects the natural landscapes that offered moments of reflection and renewal throughout her life. Surrounding her are maiden pink flowers, chosen to symbolize resilience in the harshest conditions. Together, these elements speak to the quiet strength that sustained her extraordinary journey.

The floral pattern on her bag is intentionally rendered in black and white, echoing the simplicity and modesty for which Sojourner Truth was known while subtly weaving botanical forms into every part of the composition.

My work often begins with careful observation of flowers and the natural world. In the Botanical Stories series, those observations become a way of exploring the lives of remarkable Black women whose relationships with nature reveal stories of courage, healing, wisdom and hope.
