This bouquet came together the way all of my summer paintings do, one plant at a time, observed as I found it. Vetch, crown vetch, raspberries and white campion, gathered into a mason jar of water on my drawing table.
The campion took me longer than the rest. I'd been avoiding it for a while because white flowers are some of the hardest for me to draw, but working through this piece, I found a way into it that finally felt like my own visual language. Looking closely at it as I painted, I noticed something I'd never fully registered before: the female flowers are green at the base, the male ones purple, a small detail that only shows up after studying them for awhile, year after year.
The original has sold, but it's now available as a museum-quality fine art print in two sizes: 8 x 10 in and 11 x 14 in.
